20!!
There’s a moment each year (I say that like I’ve done this a lot..) when you hit 20 miles and you think, “Damn. I’ve made it.” I made my way up to Boston this past weekend for my first group training run with the DFMC team. The weather was perfect - 50 degrees - and the course was a gorgeous reservoir woods run. It was so much fun to see old friends and fellow...

UPDATE! Lots of running happening over here…
1/31: Miami 1/2 Marathon, 75 degrees, 2:09
2/6: 16 miles around Manhattan & Brooklyn, 24 degrees, 2:20
2/13: 15 miles, same, 25 degrees, 2:16
Two and a half hours is a long time to be with your own thoughts. As I’ve mentioned before, what’s truly fascinating is to document what goes through my head on these runs.
This...

Tips for men
A few tips for men who like to hit on women when they are running:
1. Just don’t.
But if you decide to ignore this one cardinal rule, here’s a few do’s and don’ts:
DO:
- something cute, like smile at her
- say “good morning” when she runs by
- if you really want to be ballsy, stop her, ask her to take a photo of you on the Brooklyn Bridge, then invite her...
Thanks Dillen!
Killer new running mix. Word.
RE: showering
You might think that the most difficult thing about training is fitting 3-5 runs a week into your schedule. Incorrect.
The hardest thing? Trying to figure out how to get those runs in while taking as FEW showers as possible…a real trick for any girl who has a thick head of hair, no desire to dry it daily, and a love for sleep.
I hate showering to begin with. What a serious, serious waste...

Well, the weekend is officially here! Had a great last week of training this week and I have to say, the last 3 runs have been my best runs to date. I suppose that’s probably how it’s supposed to work after 5 months of training…
Tomorrow is my official fundraising party, Date My Friends, and it’s going to be an absolute blast! My mom will be in town, my boss with be MCing...

Uno month
Wow, just under a month to go before the big day. I feel better than ever. Have been running regularly and am actually starting to feel like a real runner.
Heading to Boston this weekend for one final team run. Then, come back to one nice weekend in New York, Easter, and bam, it’s Marathon Weekend!
Can’t wait to share details with everyone about my fundraising event. Mark your...

17!!!!
UPDATE! This Saturday, I spent the weekend in Boston to attend my first-even, Dana Farber Marathon Challenge group training run! It was SUCH a treat.
The course took us along many miles of the actual Marathon route, including..(dum, du, dum, dummm) Heartbreak Hill!! I ran 17 miles in around 2 hours and 45 minutes and felt great the whole time. Of course, we were blessed with amazing weather and...
Excuses excuses
As you may (or may not) have noticed, this blog has not been updated in (holy buckets) nearly 3 weeks. Below are possible excuses for not updating my training blog - I decided it’d be more fun to leave it up to you to decide which stories you’d like to believe.
1. I have been barricaded under 37 inches of snow, and because of the big storm, all Internet/Cable services have been out of...

At least I was faster than Larry the Lighthouse
I, like most people, would by lying if I said I’ve never used the power of Google to unearth unfortunate photos, high school athletic records, criminal records, family histories and (God willing) hidden trust funds of potential boyfriends. But at what point does using what the good geeks of the world have given us technically become stalking?
If you ask me, I say never. What’s on...

Frozen snot
Well, we did it. 5 DFMC New York runners, along with 4,995 other lunatics tackled the Manhattan Half Marathon today at 8am. When I left the house at 6:30am, the temperature read 14 degrees. ouch.
Truth be told, it was not so bad. Great run - two full Central Park loops — 13.1 miles. I’m not used to the hills, so I was not totally prepared, but I made it and it felt great! Met the DFMC team for...

Rick, the USPS savior
An email from Jan, 1/21/2009: Thanks once again for your thanks on the cookies. But while it was a big project, it was a fun one. Truly, I loved it and so did AN. One final story about it: I set up the 10 boxes for automatic carrier pickup from my front porch for yesterday morning. (Mailed Calvin’s at the post office automatic kiosk.) Left work at 4:00 yesterday to pick up David and...
Thanks be to Rick. He might as well have ridden up on a white horse.

WOOOOOO WHOOOO!!!!!!
SO many reasons to celebrate today - where to begin!?
1. BARACK OBAMA IS OUR PRESIDENT! Hippity horray! I missed this, but did you hear that the entire crowd started singing “nah nah nah nah, hey hey hey, gooood byeeee…” when our former President, George Bush, stepped into his helicopter to be shipped back to Texas (where he belongs..now for the love of God, keep him there)? So...
Team NYC
As many of you know, this evening marked the official start to my training. I met with 5 other DFMC runners who live in NYC for dinner and it was such a delight. I am going to be running in some terribly fabulous company!
Megan - born and raised in NYC, her parents have had the same apt in NYC for 38 years! She’s applied to Master’s programs all over the country for speech pathology...

Deep Thoughts
You know the best thing about writing this blog? The whole time I’m running all I can think about is what I’m going to post to the blog when I get home. It’s great - makes the time fly by!
While I was running tonight, I decided that I was going to write about thinking about what to write in my blog. It was beautiful out, low 40s, clear, no wind, a little damp, and tons of men...
Iowa represent →
Democratic sources say President-elect Barack Obama has selected former Iowa Gov. Tom Vilsack as agriculture secretary and will announce the appointment on Wednesday.
So often do we overlook the importance of agriculture. Love that Obama is going straight to the source - Iowa. Many may not know that Obama is incredibly savvy when it comes to the need for agricultural reform to protect our...
Holy cow
I don’t eat cheese. Well, normally, I don’t eat cheese. Nor have I consumed any other kind of dairy for the past…I don’t know…3 years? I mean, I squeeze in an occassional slice of pizza (who wouldn’t?), and every once in a while, I’ll have an undefeatable urge to just slam a quart of heavy cream, but typically, I just don’t go there. For a lot of...

You ask, “Why do we need an International Talk Like a Pirate Day?” Good question. Here’s what the International Talk Like a Pirate Day site says (an incredible read), and I quote:
“Make no mistake. We do. But it’s a little hard to articulate why, especially when you’ve made the mistake of referring to your wife as a scurvy bilge rat and tried...
"AARRRRRR"
One can hardly complain about training in the Winter when it’s 54 degrees outside! What!? Today is Tuesday, December 9 and when I left for my run tonight around 9pm, it was 54 degrees outside. I am going to blatantly avoid discussing the underlying reality, that is, Global Warming (what? Sarah Palin does it all the time..), and choose to write about my particularly fascinating run this...
I used to be a great outside shooter…until they moved the game indoors.
– Rick Nielsen
A classic Rick one-liner. Gets me every time. I thought this was the appropriate quote to begin my training blog. I have been fearing training through the Winter because it gets freakin’ cold here! I cannot take my game indoors. Can you even imagine running 20 miles on a...
