I, like most people, would by lying if I said I’ve never used the power of Google to unearth unfortunate photos, high school athletic records, criminal records, family histories and (God willing) hidden trust funds of potential boyfriends. But at what point does using what the good geeks of the world have given us technically become stalking?
If you ask me, I say never. What’s on Google is public. If you have incriminating information out there permeating the World Wide Web, that’s your problem, not mine. Everyone Google Stalks. And for those who say they don’t, they’re lying, or they’re totally inept.
But unbeknownst to me, there is a different kind of stalker out there - a (gasp!) Not-For-Profit one. For the purposes of protecting said stalkers identity (and safety, you can thank me later), let’s refer to the perpetrator as “G”.
For those who are not familiar, the New York Road Runners is the city’s largest running organization. Pretty much anyone in NYC who’s a dedicated runner is a member. NYRR hosts weekly races and is the key group behind the NYC half marathons and of course, the ING NYC Marathon. After every race, the runners times are posted and tracked online, which is completely open to the public.
This evening, it was brought to my attention that the illusive “G” has been tracking certain DFMC team members times to gauge his (err, or her..oh, who am I kidding..) own personal success to date. Now that is what I call stealth! I mean, I, even I, didn’t think to do that! NYRR stalking, who knew!?
The truth is, I’m not offended at all - nor am I surprised. However, I do feel entitled to give “G” a little taste of his own medicine. I turned the tables a bit, and did a little NYRR stalking of my own.
All of us have been dying to know how old you are. The answer: 42. Thank you to NYRR for providing us with this coveted information. So there, how does that feel? And your time for the Manhattan Half? 2:20:40. I’m pretty sure the guy in the Lighthouse costume ran faster than that. Better pick up the pace, “G”. You better believe we’ll all be watching!
(all in fun, all in good fun) GO TEAM DFMC NYC!!!!
