Rick, the USPS savior
An email from Jan, 1/21/2009:
Thanks once again for your thanks on the cookies. But while it was a big project, it was a fun one. Truly, I loved it and so did AN. One final story about it: I set up the 10 boxes for automatic carrier pickup from my front porch for yesterday morning. (Mailed Calvin’s at the post office automatic kiosk.) Left work at 4:00 yesterday to pick up David and Kris from the airport and we arrived back in Capitola at 5:10 p.m. All 10 boxes were still on the porch and I seriously freaked out. No note from the postman like there was a problem with the boxes and no mail in my mailbox. (I ALWAYS have mail and it had been a 3-day weekend.) Kris said, “Call the Post Office.” Yeah, like there’s gonna be anybody answering the phone at the post office after 5:00. But I call the post office and Rick The Supervisor answers. I tell him I set up automatic pickup and I got a confirmation from the post office and my packages are still on the porch and there’s food in them and they need to arrive in two days! I’m clearly frantic and my voice is shaking. He says, “There’s 10 boxes, right?” “Yeah, how did you know?” “I saw the email. Your carrier should have picked them up. Don’t worry. I’ll be right over and pick them up.” The guy shows up in ten minutes in his Prius. He looks at the boxes and the postage and says they all look perfect. And then he says, “We pick up and deliver mail. It’s what we do. There’s no excuse for what happened here. Heads are gonna roll. And your packages will go out on schedule tonight.” Are you believin’ that? I was so grateful to have left work early to pick up D&K from the airport. I’m gonna make one more batch of cookies and take them to Rick The Supervisor because he was truly fabulous. Now the cookie story is done.
